Dog Photography in London Kings Cross

A Morning with Peony the Dachshund

There’s something absolutely hilarious about a dog photography session in London where your model is a tiny sausage dog and buildings that are literally a thousand times her size. Peony lives just around the corner, so we kept it local for her shoot. Though when “local” includes the breathtaking Victorian-Gothic beauty of St Pancras and the industrial-chic of Coal Drops Yard, you’re not exactly slumming it on a Saturday morning walk.

Big buildings, small dog, and the early bird hustle

We kicked off at stupid o’clock outside the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel to dodge the tourist and commuters madness. The light was still sleepy, my coffee hadn’t quite hit my bloodstream yet, but Peony? Total pro from the get-go. Being the sausage dog she is, she stayed leashed throughout. Because, let’s face it, nobody wants a dachshund dash across King’s Cross traffic, but she worked those poses like she was born for the camera. In fact, she was moving so fast I struggled to keep up, but thanks to her inquisitive nature we could get her to stop and focus by making funny noises and talking to her.

We circled the station, hunting down those gorgeous arches and symmetrical backdrops. Her parents wanted a mix of close-ups and wider architectural shots to hang in their new place, and honestly, King’s Cross is a gift that keeps on giving for that kind of contrast.

When your morning stroll becomes a photoshoot playground

From St Pancras, we wandered over to Coal Drops Yard, stopping every few steps because, not kidding, every corner here is a potential magazine cover when it comes to London dog photography. The mishmash of textures – weathered brick, reflective glass, industrial ironwork – gave us so many options I was like a kid in a candy store.

our second london location

By the time we hit Coal Drops Yard, the sun had finally decided to join us. For the second part of her dog photography session in London, Peony got a quick off-lead break in the sun between shots because those little legs get chilly fast! We kept her bundled in a blanket between setups, partly practical warmth, partly tiny dog dignity preservation program.

Coal Drops Yard had so many spots to offer, and again, mostly wide urban scapes for such a tiny dog! So we focused on the smaller structures and shapes of the building, and even found ourselves in front of the water feature, which was just a dream.

The grand finale (before someone decided she was done)

We wrapped things up with some close-ups on our way back to Kings Cross Station. The light had gone from “meh” to magical, the crowds were still manageable, and Peony (who by now had clearly decided modelling was exhausting work) gave us one last perfect “I’m ready for my close-up” moment before walking away as if to say, “That’s a wrap, humans.” Her dog photography session in London was over.

And, of course, I had to sneak in a little tail shot in Canopy Market. How could I not.

But we’d already struck gold. We had shots with different textures, scales, lighting, and details, all starring one very small dog with a very big personality.
