How to Pose for a Dog & Owner Photoshoot

(Even If You Think You Can’t Pose)

your dog and owner photoshoot posing guide

Stepping in front of the camera can feel a little daunting, especially when you’re sharing the spotlight with a dog who may or may not be interested in playing along. But no need to worry. A dog and owner photoshoot isn’t about stiff, forced poses; it’s about capturing the natural connection between you and your dog, and what makes you, you.

Whether your dog is a seasoned model or more of a free spirit, here are five easy, stress-free poses that work beautifully in a studio setting. And if your dog has other ideas? Even better. The best photos happen when you go with the flow.

1. The School Photo

A classic, straightforward portrait where you and your dog sit side by side, both looking directly at the camera. Simple, timeless, and perfect for those who love a clean and elegant composition. Kind of like your formal portrait – minus the awkward school blazer. This is the very first pose I like to try to suss out the atmosphere, and a great one to start with to warm up and get comfortable in front of the camera!

2. Over the Shoulder

This pose is all about intimacy and a hint of mystery. The idea? You turn your back slightly to the camera while your dog peeks out over your shoulder or from the crook of your arm. It’s a perfect close-up that highlights your bond while keeping the focus on your dog’s expression.

3. The Romantic

One of the most natural and beautiful shots you can take. Simply face your dog and look at each other. That’s it. Whether it’s an adoring gaze or an attempt at a face lick, this pose is guaranteed to bring out genuine emotion.

4. The Low Down

For those who don’t mind getting on the floor. Lie down next to your dog, whether stretched out side by side or propped up on your elbows. This perspective keeps things relaxed and playful, and it’s especially great for small dogs who get a little lost in standing poses.

5. Tricks & Play

Some of the best moments happen when you’re not thinking about posing at all. Show off a high five, a paw shake, or any fun trick your dog loves to do. These action shots bring out personality and the natural connection you share, making them feel dynamic and full of life. Plus, if your dog is nervous, it helps them focus the attention on something else!

6. The Snuggle Seat

Sit on the floor with your legs open and let your dog sit or lie between them, wrapping your arms around them like a hug (if your dog is comfortable with light hugs). This pose creates a cosy, intimate feel, emphasising the sense of security and warmth between you and your dog.

The Secret to Great Portraits? Let Your Dog Lead

The best part about a dog & owner photoshoot is that it’s not about ‘perfect’ posing. If your dog decides to flop over dramatically, nuzzle into you, or do something completely unexpected, lean into it. The most beautiful moments happen when you’re not overthinking it. Try to relax, and let it happen. Just remember to keep smiling!
